Get to know your PTA Board Members

Board members for 2011 - 2012

President :
Derek Yegian
Vice President : Teddi McEwen
Treasurer : Anthony Denzer
Secretary: RuthEllen Bowen

Derek Yegian, PTA President, has three children at Kainalu; 5th grader, a 2nd grader, and an incoming Kindergartener.  They have been in Kailua for a year having relocated from Oakland, California in the summer of 2010.  Last year, Derek was the PTA Vice President of membership, chaired the Jog-a-thon, helped with AINI IS in the 1st grade classrooms, and led the Kainalu Remote Operated Vehicle afterschool program.  This fall, he’ll be helping with the AGT Lego Robotics competition. In his spare time, he is a mechanical engineer who consults at Lawrence Berkeley National Lab and Hawaiian companies.

Teddi McEwen, PTA Vice President, has been with Kainalu for the past 5 years, the past two of which she served as Treasurer. Prior to moving to Kainalu, she served as Treasurer for Lincoln Elementary School in Redondo Beach, CA for two years and Financial Secretary for one year. She has two children at Kailua Intermediate School, a eighth grader and a seventh grader, and a third grader here at Kainalu.  She teaches ‘Kid’s Yoga’ and ‘Zumba’ as part of the after school program and volunteers when needed for classroom and PTA functions such as Fun Fair, Book Fair, and Physical Fitness Day.

Anthony Denzer, PTA Treasurer, has a new Kindergartener at Kainalu School. He’s lived in Hawaii since 1966, and actually attended Kainalu School from Kindergarten to 6th grade. Anthony recently accepted a job with Hawaiian Airlines after completing a two-year work contract in Japan. Prior to that he was at Aloha Airlines, and served as Treasurer for the Pilot’s Union there from 2001-2006.

RuthEllen Bowen, PTA Secretary, has been with Kainalu for the last nine years. Her oldest daughter graduated from 6th grade in 2008 and is now in the 10th grade at Le Jardin Academy. RuthEllen’s youngest daughter is in 3rd grade at Kainalu. RuthEllen has volunteered as a room parent, SOKPA (chorus-supporting parent), Reading Log, Fun Fair, Book Fair, Teacher and Staff Appreciation Week, JogAThon, and Physical Fitness Day. RuthEllen was our PTA President during the 2008 - 2009 and 2009 - 2010 school years. Her "claim to fame" was designing and implementing the "Race to Kure" reading contest two years ago where the classrooms competed as dolphins swimming (by reading) up the Northwest Hawaiian Islands (Papahnaumokukea Marine National Monument). RuthEllen also serves as the parent representative for Kainalu’s School Community Council (SCC).

Benefits of being a PTA member:

Our Kainalu PTA benefits EVERYONE!  PTA addresses issues that are important to parents and public school administrators. We fight for full funding, quality teachers, and capabilities for schools to thrive.  As a PTA we can:

  • Organize hard-working, dedicated parent and community volunteers who can help implement school improvement programs.
  • Improve Communication. Through our website, newsletters, information fliers, monthly board meetings, and Facebook we keep you and the school community informed of current events, issues, and accomplishments.
  • See Measurable Results. More than 85 research studies conducted over the past 30 years prove that kids do better when parents are involved. Grades are higher. Test scores improve. Attendance increases.
  • Discover More Dollars. We are self-funding. EVERY fundraiser supports our students, school programs, building improvements, and educational events.
  • Boost Children’s Well-Being. Our Kainalu PTA focuses on what students need to be successful in their learning, including nutrition, health, school safety, physical fitness and general well-being. The PTA works with our teachers and staff to ensure that every student at Kainalu succeeds.
  • Enjoy Informed Parents. Involved parents understand the challenges schools face and become part of the solution. By developing a closer relationship with parents, student achievement improves, and Kainalu develops a positive reputation in the community.

We can’t do it alone. IT TAKES A PARENT, just like you. So, please join with us today in making our school GREAT!

The National PTA is able to partner with businesses and negotiate special discounts, fundraising opportunities, and other valuable benefits exclusively for PTA members. When you make purchases from these companies, not only will you receive a discount, but National PTA will also receive a percentage of royalties from the sale. Here are just a few of the organizations that are offering PTA members discounts: MetLife Auto & Home, Sharp Electronics Corporation, Southwest Airlines, and T Mobile.
